Tractors are important laborsaving devices for farms and small acreages. They have moving parts that need regular attention to keep them working smoothly. There are many different kinds of tractors and each differs slightly in maintenance requirements. If you have the maintenance manual that came with your tractor, read and follow it. If not, follow these steps and tips for general ways to maintain a tractor.

Instructions

    • 1
Keep the oil checked and filled. Check the engine and hydraulic oil at the end of every use, after it has had time to settle. Also, check the oil level in the oil bath air cleaner as you are cleaning the filter.
    • 2
Uncap the radiator after every 8 to 10 hours of use and make sure the fluid level is correct. Refill with a one-part water to one-part antifreeze mixture. Use an antifreeze tester in the fall to ensure the mixture is right to protect the engine block on the tractor from freezing.
    • 3
Clean the shield around the radiator and the radiator itself. Use compressed air to spray away dust and debris that restrict airflow.
    • 4
Use a good grade of grease and a grease gun to go around the tractor and pump a little grease into all grease jerks. Look for jerks wherever there are moving parts, such as on the brake and clutch linkages, steering mechanism, wheels, three-point lift hitch, and loader mechanism, if any.
    • 5
Depress the radiator fan belt with your thumb. If it deflects more than a half inch, tighten the belt. Repeat the procedure for any other drive belts, such as the alternator belt. Replace belts when they become frayed or cracked.
    • 6
Squeeze the radiator hoses. If any are bulging or soft, replace with new.
    • 7
Check the air pressure in all tires with an air pressure gauge. Look on the tire for the rated pressure stamping and don't exceed it. Note that rear tractor tires are usually fluid filled.
    • 8
Open the battery compartment and look for corrosion around the terminals. Carefully remove the positive wire from the terminal and clean with a wire brush and/or a solution of baking soda and water. Repeat the procedure with the negative terminal. Unless it is a sealed battery, check the electrolyte levels and refill with distilled water, if needed.
    • 9
Change engine and hydraulic oil at least once a season, but more often if you are using the tractor heavily. Change the engine oil after every 120 hours of use. Clean or replace the hydraulic oil filter each time you change the fluid.
    • 10
Tighten all lug nuts and wheel attachments periodically. These sometimes work loose under heavy use without maintenance.
