It is getting that time of year again. I can feel it in the air, that and I can see my lawn peeking out from beneath the melting snow. I am excited, yet know I have a huge job ahead of me, preparing my lawn for its first mowing of the season.
All winter your lawn lays dormant awaiting the first signs of spring to start jumping back into action, however, the winter can be hard on the fragile blades of grass as well as leave a huge amount of debris in your yard. The first tip I am going to share with you for a beautiful yard and future ease of mowing is this; clean your yard. What does this mean you ask? It means pull out the rake and rake up any left over leaves that are soggy weighing down the new growth of your lawn. Remove all twigs, sticks, and branches. The grass you may want to compost and use the sticks and branches to have yourself the first bonfire of the spring treating yourself to roasted hotdogs and marshmallows. No matter what you do with the leaves or debris, just make sure it is off your lawn. The raking allows the lawn to breath in the glory of spring.
Your lawn is prepped and ready, a week or so has gone by, and you see that your lawn is coming to action. Do not be too quick to pull out your riding lawn mower or push mower yet. Let it get a little bit tall. This helps the roots become firmly reestablished. When the grass is at least 4 to 5 inches tall it is time to prepare your mowing equipment.
Mowing Equipment tips:
1.) Dump out last year's gas and start the new season with fresh gas.
2.) Check the oil and change if necessary.
3.) Check your spark plugs if there as been any corrosion over the winter.
4.) Sharpen them blades.
5.) Check riding mower belts to make sure they are secure.
6.) Adjust the mower deck on your Riding mower so the rear is just a tad bit lower then the front of the deck.
Now you are ready to begin the new season of mowing on the right foot. Here are some tips and tricks to help insure that your yard is the best-looking yard on the block.
1.) Your first mow you will more then likely have to mow the yard twice. Do not start on a low cut setting on your riding mower or push mower. Go high and cut twice. This will not only give you a cleaner cut looking yard but also help keep the trimmings down to small particles, which make it quicker to decompose and fertilize your lawn.
2.) Never cut your lawn too short. It is hard on the root system as well as you risk a patchy looking yard.
3.) Do not mow when your grass is wet, it is not only hard on the grass but your mowers as well.
4.) Never mow your lawn in the same direction twice. This is my routine; I rotate between each mowing diagonal first time, up and down next time, opposite diagonal next, then side to side last time and then continue to repeat in that fashion. Reason behind this, other then that is how my dad made us mow as kids is you are less likely to get mower patterns and it gives your lawn a cleaner looking cut.
5.) Do not think just because you had your mower blades sharpened at the beginning of the season doesn't mean you don't have to do it again several times through out the season. The sharper the blades, the cleaner the cut and the healthier it is on your lawn. Moreover, do not forget to check your oil before each mowing.
6.)When mowing, if you do not have a bagger, make sure to mow in the direction where the clippings are shooting out onto previously mowed lawn, not where you still have yet to mow. That is unless you really like a challenge and do not care how bogged down your mower gets or how shoddy of a job mowing you do.
7.) Okay, this one some people may disagree with me; however this is how I do it. When I mow along the roadway, (I live in the country though) I use a push mower and I make sure that clippings (and rocks) shoot out towards the road. Okay, I look if there is any traffic coming first so I don't hit any cars passing by but cars throw rocks in your yard and this is just my way of giving the rocks back to the road.
8.) Trim with a push mower around all trees and buildings first. It opens it up for your riding mower to do its job easier and it gets the hard part done first. You know, otherwise all the trimming might not get done.
You are all set now to tackle that yard with ease but keep in mind; push lawn mowers and riding lawn mowers are dangerous equipment. Treat them with respect, always mow with shoes on, not flip flops, safety glasses are highly advised, and watch what you are doing. Look ahead at all times and survey what you are driving or pushing your mower into.
