1. Be Safe
As we mentioned in our tractor tip for mower maintenance, safety is always the top priority. Make sure to disconnect all power sources including the PTO, block the baler’s wheels and engage the tractor’s parking break before proceeding.
2. Consult the Owner’s Manual
Every baler is different. Whether it’s a round, square or silage model, the owner’s manual is an excellent resource for the do’s and don’ts of your baler. Some parts should be checked more frequently, while others only need attention once per cutting or season.
3. Check the PTO
Start by making sure your tractor’s drawbar is low enough so the baler hitch and PTO are level. Then look for cracks or other signs of wear on the universal joints and check the slip clutch linings and spring length on the bolts. Don’t forget to readjust the tension on the slip clutch bolts to manufacturer’s specifications, check the flywheel and grease the plunger.
4. Evaluate the Chamber
Make sure the correct twine or net wrap is installed and set to the proper tension. If your baler has a knotter, make sure to keep it clean and lubricated. And don’t forget to check the sharpness of its knife. If your baler has a thrower, make sure the belts are in good condition and set to the correct tension. It’s also important to double check for leftover debris after last year’s baling season.
5. Clean, Lubricate and Check Other Parts
Cleaning and lubrication may seem like small steps, but they can make a big difference in the longevity of your baler. Don’t forget to wipe fittings clean before reapplying lubrication to all moving parts – a step that will cut down on rust and other forms of depreciation. Other parts to consider include the length arm, wheel bearings and spindle bolts.
6. Take It for a Test Drive
Make sure your baler is performing properly on the first few bales. It should be picking up at least 90% of the windrow, so take time to check the blades, mower knives and/or hay rake tines if performance isn’t up to par.
