Tractor Part Tips:Tractor PTO Drivelines at Tractor Part Mart

Whether you’re cutting and baling alfalfa, doing chores around the farm or simply preparing for the fall harvest, it’s important to keep your tractor’s PTO in peak operating condition. One way to do so is by properly greasing the driveline. Every tractor has different requirements depending on the degree and type of PTO. Consider these recommendations when greasing your driveline:
  • Safety First. This has been a reoccurring theme in our Tractor Part Tips, but it can’t be overstated. PTO drivelines can cause serious injuries if they’re not handled properly. To help prevent the risk of injury, always make sure to disengage the driveline, shut off your tractor and engage the parking break before moving on.
  • Lubricate all fittings with a high quality, lithium soap compatible EP grease that meets the NLGI #2 specifications and contains no more than 1% molybdenum disulfide. EP grease that meets the NLGI #2 specifications and contains 3% molybdenum disulfide may be substituted in the telescoping members only.
  • A good rule of thumb for greasing constant velocity (CV) drivelines is every 8 hours of use. For more details, check out our charts for 50-degree, 80-degree and telescoping PTO drivelines.

  • Don’t forget to grease the ball joint, which is key for getting CV drivelines working.
  • Keep moving parts clean and cool. Dirt and debris can cause friction, creating heat that can destroy bearings, joints and other moving parts.
  • Cross and bearing kits are central components of PTO drivelines. Standard Cross & Bearing Kits (R-Kits) should be greased every eight hours of operation. Extended Lubrication Cross & Bearing Kits (E-Kits) should be greased every 50-250 hours of operation.
