It’s good practice to remove the battery at the end of the season if you plan on storing your tractor for an extended period of time. And, if you’re in colder climates, it’s best to remove the battery before the first freeze to prevent the battery from bursting. Follow these simple steps to ensure proper removal of your tractor’s battery:
Step 1: Check the owner’s manual to find where the battery is located. Some are found under the seat while others are under the hood.
Step 2: Remove the positive (red) cable from the battery.
Step 3: Remove the negative (black) cable from the battery terminal.
Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down straps. Some tractors use a rubber band-type hold-down strap similar to a bungee cord while others use a metal hold-down strap. Metal hold-down straps may require a ratchet and extension to remove.
Step 5: Remove the battery from the tray.
Once the battery is removed, take a few moments to ensure it will be in good condition when warm weather returns:
- Clean the casing and terminal posts
- Check the electrolyte level
- Place a trickle charger on the battery to bring it up to charge
- Put a light coating of petroleum jelly on the posts to prevent any lead reaction to the elements
- Store the battery off the ground or cement in a warm, dry place like on a shelf. A battery stored on the ground or cement will lose its charge in a few weeks.
